Prepared?

Take Stock...

The weather change is always a good time to take stock and prepare for what if…

Having been stranded a time or two, I know how important it is to keep emergency supplies in the vehicle.  A flashlight, a flare or a blinking light, a tool kit, rain gear, blanket, snacks, and water can go a long way to making a difficult situation so much better.

Flat Tire, Need an Iron…

Speaking from experience, it is wise to check that your tire iron is the correct size for all of the lug nuts on your vehicle. Occasionally they are not all the same size.

Scout It Out...

Don’t be overwhelmed by extensive lists.  You may already have items in your home that can be used to create an emergency kit in your home and in your vehicle.  As time goes by continue to add different pieces to your collection.  Assemble as much as you can  in a storage tub or tote bag that is easily accessible in the event of an emergency.

Here are some basic supplies that would help you get through an outage lasting three to five days:

Three- to five-day supply of non-perishable food that needs little or no cooking
Blankets and pillows
Portable, battery-powered radio and clock
Flashlights
Extra batteries
Manual can opener, bottle opener, and utility knife
First-aid kit
Bottled water (minimum two quarts per person per day but preferably one gallon per person per day)
Candles
Matches in a waterproof container or a lighter
Cooler (and keep ice or ice packs ready in your freezer)
Personal hygiene, sanitary supplies
Cash (ATM's and banks may not be available)
Pet supplies for three to five days
Playing cards, games, and books for entertainment
Prescription medications
Phone charger for a car

Out in the Cold...

For your safety keep the barbecue and the generators outside.   In the event of an outage, dress in layers to keep warm, gather in a central room in your home to conserve heat and resources.  Keep the doors closed to the fridge to keep the temperature cool inside.

Don’t Forget the Fun….

We keep a supply of glow sticks, battery operated games, board games, books, arts and crafts to create by lantern light.  A metal teapot to boil water for hot Cocoa and Marshmallows for roasting on the grill.

Matt Grover Educator of the Month

Educator of the Month...

It is inspiring to read all of the heartfelt applications that are submitted each month.  We are surrounded by incredible educators who demonstrate their care and commitment to  each generation of children.  After careful review, we have selected our winner!

And the Winner of the December 2015 Educator of the Month Award Is….

Matt Grover, of Hilltop Elementary in the Edmonds School District

Below is the entry that was submitted to our website outlining why Mr. Grover is so deserving of  the $500 award:

I have had the great pleasure of not only working with Mr. Matt Grover, but my son was lucky enough to have him as his third grade teacher. Mr. Grover is an amazing teacher who shows a huge amount of care for his students. He has such a calm and kind manner, and treats his students with so much respect.

He has an incredible way of helping all his students to grow to love reading. My son was a good reader going into third grade, but gained a great love and interest in books by the end of the school year because of Mr. Grover. Mr. Grover helped in creating a boy’s book club which brought over 50 boys to gather after school to read and talk about books. It was amazing to see so many boys gather, and I am confident that it was a successful club because of Mr. Grover.

I feel blessed and fortunate that my son was able to learn and grow from Mr. Grover. My son says, "He is a good teacher because he read us a lot of really cool books. He is very nice and doesn't ever get mad. I learned to love reading a lot and I learned a lot of math."

I hope you will choose Mr. Grover as a teacher of the month, he is more than deserving of this award!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

It is That Time of Year…

For Christmas Traditions, those events and activities that we enjoy most.  I have been asking friends and family an important question this season. “What is your favorite Holiday Tradition?”

From Our Little Blue House to Yours…

We enjoy gathering together for dinner gatherings with family and friends to share the joy of this season.

One of the traditions from Rick’s family brings out the kid in all of them, as they gather for an adventure shopping for Toys for Tots.

Holly and her family really enjoy making Holiday Cards for Heroes to bring cheer to the military and their families. Christmas Caroling at the Nursing Home with their 4-H Club brings so much joy to the the residents and the carolers. and Celebrating the Reason for the Season by attending Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at their family Church.

Kristi and her family host Christmas Cookie Bake-a-Thons, getting together with family to “roll out the dough”, bake and decorate their delightful creations.  Then parties with friends to share and trade cookies and recipes for future celebrations.

Celebrate and Get Home Safe...

Have a plan to get home safely like the Falcon 9 Rocket.  If you partake or are overtired from your activities do not drive.  Arrange for a designated driver, call a friend, call a tow truck, or plan to stay.

If you get into trouble with the law call your designated Attorney Rick Merrill, he is available 24/7 and can give you direction.

White Christmas…

Yes, you heard me right, the mountain forecast says that the snow level will be 400 feet on Christmas Day.  This is a good time to remember safe driving tips for the snow, leave a large following distance, have chains or traction tires available, pack some sand for added traction if you need to get a grip.

With Snow on the Way…Rick may need to hitch up the sleigh.

Enter Before it is Too Late….

You could Win $100 for your Original Photo in our photo contest, and you can choose one of these deserving Charities for Rick to donate $100 to on your behalf.
