I don’t know about you but I diligently listen to the traffic report during my morning commute. It’s amazing how often an accident happens and I have to plan a new route to avoid the traffic jam. However, I am thankful that it wasn’t me this time, I have this looming fear that one day it’s going to be my turn and I wonder how my family would fare if something bad happened.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration publishes yearly facts on how many motor vehicle crashes occur. In December 2014, they released the 2013 figures and general statistics for motor vehicle crashes. In 2013, there were over 5 million police reported crashes, and among those crashes over 2 million people were injured. The people injured per day for the year 2013 was on average 6,337.
What are the odds?
Stop and think about that for a moment - every day of the year over 6,000 people a day are getting injured in almost 15,000 accidents. And sure, there may be over 250 million cars on the roads and by that reckoning the chances of you being in an accident are 0.006% - the question you have to ask yourself is - do you feel lucky?
The reality is that it is likely that you’ll drive to the office every week of your working career and never be in an accident, but if you are - here are a few things you must ensure you do to protect yourself and your family.
Understanding Liability and Personal Injury Protection Insurance
If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident, you want to make sure that you get the insurance information from all the parties involved in the accident. The insurance company of the at fault parties insurance will cover the damages to your car and also your medical bills if you are injured. If you have purchased personal injury protection for your auto insurance, that can be used as well to help cover the costs of the possible medical bills. Personal injury protection is an additional insurance that can be purchased with your liability insurance coverage. It is an extension of your liability insurance to help cover medical expenses, and sometimes lost wages and other damages.
