2018 Scholarship Runner Up Winners

We are Pleased to Announce the Runner Up Winners of the Attorney Rick Merrill Dream Scholarship for 2018...

The Attorney Rick Merrill Dream Scholarship was started in order to help support the dreams of a current high school or college student looking to make a difference through the pursuit of their passion.

We had many qualified applicants and after significant deliberation we have chosen to award these runner up scholarships to these amazing applicants.

Congratulations to our all of our winners!

The highlights of their winning applications are below...

Hannah Hitterdal 2018 Scholarship 1500.jpg

We are ecstatic to support Hannah Hitterdal with her dream-Criminal Justice and Sociology

I have a passion to change the correctional facilities to help inmates. This is so important to me because I believe that everyone deserves a second chance.  Everyone has messed up, big or small we all make mistakes.

Giving the inmates an education, a highschool diploma or a higher education degree, is an effective way of setting them up on the right foot.

Animal Therapy has been proven to be one of the most effective ways of rehabilitating inmates.    It helps them learn social connections, love and loss.  In the eyes of the animal, the inmate did nothing wrong and it will give the inmate unconditional love.  They train animals for many purposes and give them back to the community they hurt.

Nora Dennelly 2018 scholarship 1500.jpg

We are ecstatic to support Nora Dennelly with her dream- Harpest

Ever since I was a little girl, I dreamed of playing the harp. After taking a few lessons, I fell in love with the instrument and there was no turning back.

I am pursuing my dream not only because it is what I love, but because I want my music teachers to see their student accomplish what they have helped me to achieve.

I plan to attend Western Washington University in the Fall of 2018 where I will study under Jill Whitman and major in Music Performance on the harp.

Corrine Booth 2018 Scholarship 600.jpg

We are ecstatic to support Corrine Booth with her dream- Choir Teacher

My parents always tell me about when I was just about ten months old I’d hit a key on my little toy piano and would hum the note on pitch.  Many of my friends tease me saying that I’m “a walking musical” because I’m always singing or playing my piano or ukulele.

Nursing homes have always had a special place in my heart so at the end of every month, we go sing for them. Nothing makes me smile more than when an elder grabs my hand after performing and tells me how thankful they are.  Using my talents to brighten someone’s day brings me so much joy.

My dream is to go to college for the music education program to be a choir director. My choir director, Karen Westerfield, has inspired me to pursue this career and I hope to be half the teacher she is.

Ruth Culbertson 2018 Scholarship 1400.jpg

We are ecstatic to support Ruth Culbertson with her dream- Music Teacher

A twist on the life of a piano teacher: Sometimes students like to play tricks! ☺
My dream after college is to become a music teacher. I have a passion for music as well as for working with youth.
Working with kids can be very rewarding and provides many fun moments that shape students’ lives in a positive and exciting way! This is just one of many examples!

Emma Raker 2018 Scholarship 1500.jpg

We are ecstatic to support Emma Raker with her dream- Music Teacher

There is so much conflict, debate, and prejudice that is in the world and I firmly believe that music is the change.  As a Music Teacher, I want to make a lasting impact in my future student’s lives.

I hope to inspire them to make the world a better place, while educating them on musicianship and the values that I have been taught through my music teachers

Dreams do come true and I cannot wait for those dreams to happen.

My ultimate goal is to take a group of students to play at Carnegie Hall, just as I had the opportunity to because playing there greatly fostered my passion of music. The immense responsibility of taking the stage was almost unbelievable, as I could feel the presence of all who have played there before - their passion and the love of music that I share with them.

Kayla Sprague 2018 Scholarship Photo 650.jpg

We are ecstatic to support Kayla Sprague with her dream- Computer Science and Software Engineering

I stared at my dad’s computer monitor, an unplugged computer keyboard in my reach. From toddler to adulthood, video games have given me the opportunity to be an adventurer fueled by curiosity and the desire to learn.  I have carried that into reality.

I have embarked on my path with an insatiable fascination with machine learning, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality to motivate me.

As a first-generation student raised in a low-income family, I knew that my financial circumstance would be an obstacle.

But if video games have taught me anything, it is that where there is a will, there is a way.  I am fortunate enough to have learned that in a high chair.

Congratulations again to all of our winners!

2018 Scholarship Winners

We are Pleased to Announce the Winner of the $1500 Attorney Rick Merrill Dream Scholarship for 2018...

The Attorney Rick Merrill Dream Scholarship was started in order to help support the dreams of a current high school or college student looking to make a difference through the pursuit of their passion.

We had many qualified applicants and after significant deliberation a tie was declared and our winners were chosen.

Congratulations to our two $1500 winners Casey Benson and June Chang!

The highlights of their winning applications are below...

Casey Benson 2018 Scholarship 500.jpg

We are ecstatic to support Casey Benson with her dream-Geneticist

Seeing people, like one of these children, suffer every day from disease breaks my heart and makes me want to scour for solutions and inspire me to become a geneticist.

Genetics has high potential  to positively affect the quality of life for children in our society and make an enormous difference by positively impacting societal standards of life quality. Furthermore, it is believed by many scientists that the cure to many diseases lies within the processes and functions of DNA.

This dream is important to me, because of the potential to cure diseases and perhaps destructive habits and addictions.  I am working to change the lives of all people through advancements in genetics.

June Chang 2018 Scholarship 1200.jpg

We are ecstatic to support June Chang with her dream- Psychology and Economics

I have a responsibility to use my perspective and voice to lead a discussion that’ll reform the way mental health is perceived in today’s society.  My mission, is helping to lower suicide rates and fighting for reconciliation of the silence around mental health issues.

This statue shows a grandchild with his grandfather sitting on a bench, expressing feelings of love and familial bond represents what many are hoping for: love, acceptance, healing, and strength in times of adversity.

I want to help others discover their capabilities and potentials through overcoming their hardships.  I hope to open my own private practice, where I’ll be able to find ways to end the marginalization of mental illnesses, better an individual’s life, and encourage resources that help those in need.

Congratulations again to our winners Casey Benson and June Chang!

Stay tuned for more good news next week.
